Computer Forensics

Good or Sinister
Computer Forensics - Laptop computer
Computers and networks have become an essential tool in all our working environments. The Internet is a vast source of information on every conceivable subject. But have you considered the darker side? There are as many sinister uses of computer technology as there are positive benefits.

Threat
The public is well aware of the traditional 'hacker', and computer viruses which receive extensive press coverage. There are numerous products available to protect you from external threats. However, the greatest threat to a business comes from inside the organisation.

The following are some of the common misuses of company systems:

• Personal email & web browsing
• Running a private business (very common)
• Committing fraud
• Industrial espionage
• Downloading of pornography
• Launching of Viruses, Trojans and other 'Hacker' software and...

Everyday Abuse
When misuse or abuse is suspected, what steps should be taken? The knee-jerk reaction is to task the company's IT department to investigate. Unfortunately, well-meaning intervention by IT staff has, in a number of cases, contaminated or even destroyed evidence.

Expert advice should be sought immediately, and depending upon the severity, type and extent of the offence and the computers and network involved, an action plan can be drawn up. This plan will minimise disruption to the business, while maintaining any evidence that may be available. At this point a decision should also be taken on the likely outcome of the investigation, and the subsequent action the company might wish to take.

OVAG's staff has decades of experience in investigations, with the majority from Law Enforcement, Security Services and Intelligence backgrounds. We do not just provide a technical Computer Forensic capability (though our facility is state-of-the-art) - we provide the entire experienced backup an investigation needs, and can take a case as far as criminal prosecution if required. We also realise that in many cases a discreet outcome is required and, to this end, we are fully trained and capable of conducting covert enquires.

If you suspect computer misuse, or would like advice on your IT security policy, then please call us for a confidential discussion. We will be pleased to advise you of the best course of action, and you will be under no obligation to us.
